NOTE THAT: IF you are using a Brita Fjord, for instance, the "Wilko" or STRIX (Aqua Optima Evolve) filter cartridge sits differently, and will filter at a SLOWER rate when the water level falls below the main inlet level of the cartridge. It is VERY important to PRE-WASH the Brita Maxtra or "Wilko"/STRIX filter, for about 3 to 5 minutes, as this will release black carbon dust. Once done, the Evolve cartridge will give a good account of itself. One point we have noticed, when it comes to removal from the jug, the Evolve cartridge may need pressure from below.
A newcomer to this market is the FilterLogic FL402H. This does not have the same limitation as the "Evolve" cartridge. Some attention is needed to ensure the rubber seal is seated correctly. In our opinion it is a good alternative to the Brita part.
Though Maxtra is the latest technology, "Classic" filters will be available for some time to come, and of course, if you live in a soft water area, the classic filter may adequately fit your need. At least one manufacturer may be considering a "Classic" style cartridge with maxtra performance.
